Adult beetles have different sizes and colors but most are between one tenth of an inch and three sixteenths of an inch long. Their larvae are grublike and covered with hairs. They range in color from black to speckled with white brown yellow and orange. They have a slightly rounded shell and are usually black brown in colour with flecks of white on their backs.

They may look mottled with black brown and white or be solid black depending on the species. They have an elongated body which is covered in hair or large setae. These are the smallest of the carpet beetles measuring in at around 0 25cm. Most adult carpet beetles range from 2 mm to 5 mm in length with very short clubbed antennae and chewing mouthparts. It grows up to 5 mm in length. The adults are 1 16 to 1 8 inch long and oval shaped.
